Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment is used for:

Softening and moisturizing dry, cracked, or irritated skin.


Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment is an emollient. It works by softening and moisturizing the skin.


Do NOT use Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment if:


  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment

Before using Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment:


Some medical conditions may interact with Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:


  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding

  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement

  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances

How to use Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment:


Use Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.


  • Wash your hands before using Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment.

  • Wash and dry the affected area, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Apply a thin layer of medicine to the affected area, then gently spread the medicine until it is evenly distributed.

  • Wash your hands immediately after using Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment, unless your hands are part of the treated area.

  • Check with your doctor or pharmacist before applying a bandage to the affected area.

  • If you miss a dose of Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment and are using it regularly, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.

Important safety information:


  • Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment is for external use only. Avoid getting Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you get Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment in your eyes, rinse immediately with cool water.

  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant while taking Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment during pregnancy. It is unknown if Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.


Possible side effects of Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment:


All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:



Mild itching, burning, drying, or stinging.



Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue).

Proper storage of Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment:

Store Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Store Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Mineral Oil/Hydrophilic Petrolatum Ointment out of the reach of children and away from pets.
